Update from Coach Evans- JV & Varsity

Hello Parents,

Below is a message I shared with the football players.  It details the month of June and what our activities for football are going to be.  I felt it would be more efficient and transparent to just send you the same message as the players.

One thing that I need to add for the parents is registration.  We will hold our registration nights as soon as we get word as to what football may be like in the Fall.  There are a lot of rumors and speculation but nothing concrete yet.  Once we are allowed to resume as a team, I will contact everyone and let them know what the plan is.  We have numerous contingency plans in place on our end, so we will be able to get up and going very quickly once we get the green light from the CIF and our district.

As adults, we are going to have to move quickly, as well, in regards to registration.  I will work with Mike Stabbert and the TDC to develop a detailed plan for registration and we will get you the plan as soon as we can roll it out.  What I am going to need from you all is to be ready to get registered as soon as we are able to.  This season is unlike any we have had before, so stability and consistency once we are able to resume is going to be paramount.  We will need to be the ones to provide that stability and consistency for the kids to follow.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.  I appreciate you taking the time to read all of this.

WHERE WE ARE AT
At the time I am sending this, there is no new news to report on the upcoming season.  As of right now, we are still operating within the school closure guidelines, which means that we (the team) are not allowed to be together as a whole group and the coaches cannot be with you for any workouts.  There is some light at the end of the tunnel where we will eventually be able to get together but nothing has been approved yet.  Once we get the ok, we will need to be ready to roll in whatever capacity they allow us to work together.  Trust me, as soon as I hear something, you will be the first to know.

PLAYER DRIVEN WORKOUTS
Like I mentioned before, this is a very important time for our football season.  This time over the early parts of June, and your commitment to motivate yourself and your teammates to go out and train on your own, is going to define our success during the season.  We need to start being proactive in our training.  This responsibility will fall on your shoulders, as we are not allowed to mandate that you train, nor can we be there with you while you do.  The pride this team has in itself will be defined by what we do BEFORE we are able to get together.  This is where we become a mature football team.

Your coaches have developed position-based practice plans and workout for you to complete.  I will send out another email with a more in depth description.  To summarize the plan: you will contact your coach based on your position group and they will send you the workout.  The workout will consist of a stretch, a warm up run, drills for your offensive position and your defensive position, and end with a stretch.  We are advising that you complete the workout 3 days per week.  I will detail more down below in the scheduling part.  Again, this is as close as we can get to planning a workout for you.  The rest will be your responsibility.  When you do it, where you do it, who you do it with, will all be up to you.

We would prefer that you complete these workouts as opposed to working with a trainer.  If you want to work with a trainer, great, but do that on top of the workouts we are providing you.  The workouts we are providing will be football specific to your position and we will build off them when we come back together.  These workouts are going to be optional as we cannot mandate that you complete them but they are highly recommended if we are going to be able to make up for lost time once we are allowed to practice together.

1st WEEK OF JUNE
June 1 - 5 was originally planned to be our football camp.  With that cancelled, we are planning a few days of events for the 1st week of June.  We want to develop and stay in a football mindset now that school has ended.  You want to look at the month of June as the start of football season - Time to commit!

Deep Stretch Monday = You getting a good stretch in.  Yoga is preferred but you can develop your own regiment if you like.  This should be a deep stretch of at least 30 minutes.  You can find some athletic stretching or Stretch Yoga online, which would be the easiest and most efficient way of doing it.  If you stretch on your own, you want to stretch each area of your body, focusing on breathing and holding the stretch (10 deep breaths).  As we go forward, stretching is going to be vital for injury avoidance, recovery, and mental toughness.  You should be tired after your stretching and maybe even sore the next day.

Player Workouts = You completing the workouts your position coaches supply you with.

Pride Friday = You pushing yourself on your own.  Get some sprints in.  Tire yourself out.  This would be a perfect time to work with your trainer if you have one.  You should be exhausted after this workout and give yourself the weekend to recuperate.

Team Activities = Zoom Meeting for Unit 6 of the book on Tuesday; a very special Zoom talk from Robert Paylor on Wednesday night, and a Zoom team building activity on Thursday. These meetings are mandatory.

JUNE SCHEDULE
We can only plan out one month at a time because of the uncertainty.  We have plans in place for July and August and we will release them as we begin to learn more.   Right now, plan for the month of June to be all football.  We do not have any further information on the Santa Cruz trip yet.

ZOOM MEETING ETIQUETTE
During the Zoom meetings, you need to be in attendance, in front of your device, with the camera on.  No black screens.  These meetings are vital and are mandatory.  If you have workouts scheduled, you need to work around them to be at the meetings.  I will send out the links for the meetings.  THIS IS IMPORTANT AND YOU NEED TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.  No excuses.

QUIZZES
Your position coaches will be developing quizzes for you each week based on the material they covered in the previous week's Zoom meeting.  I would advise that you write down the information in a football notebook when your coaches are covering it.  That exact material will be the basis of your quiz the following week.  We will have O quizzes on 6/16, 6/23, and 6/29.  We will have D quizzes on 6/18, 6/25, and 6/30.  The mental part of the game is huge and we need to make sure we have down our basics for when we can get back together.

THEME SONG
Each position group will develop a group name and choose a theme song that represents your group.  The groups will be made up of JV and Varsity players.  This will be a collaborative effort amongst the group.  On Thursday, June 4th, your group will present your group name and your song, and you will tell the rest of the team during the Zoom meeting why you chose it, how it represents your group, and how it will help you represent Granite Bay Football.  It can be any song, from any era.  On Wednesday 6/17, your group will perform the song for the rest of the team.  I will go into greater detail at our Zoom meeting on Tuesday 6/2, but no n bombs and ridiculously filthy language.  If you perform a song that has this kind of stuff in it, you will have to perform the radio version.  WE WANT TO SHOW PROPER RESPECT AND THIS ACTIVITY SHOULD BE FUN.  Nothing disrespectful.  This is your chance to establish your group's identity.  We need to show the proper respect to all people, so be careful with the song you choose.  We want input from your entire group.

CONCLUSION
If we are diligent in pushing ourselves and committing to football over the month of June, we will not be behind when we are able to resume.  If we are not, we will be way behind.  This is your individual chance to affect the larger group, which is what a TEAM is all about.  Only you can make sure that you get this stuff done.  It is time to mature and begin to put our money where our mouth is.  If we want to win, if we want to achieve the goals of team unity and trust that you have been describing in the book, we need to jump in with both feet.  This is where that trust is built amongst your teammates.  While this is not ideal, it is what we need to do.  I encourage you to workout together if you follow the social distancing guidelines.  All of the workouts provided by your coaches will be able to be executed while still social distancing.

Like I said, this is not ideal, but this is our chance.  RIGHT NOW!  This is our chance to establish what kind of team we are going to have.  This is what we have to do to reach all of the goals you guys have set.  If we do not push ourselves to buy in and follow the plan, it is going to hurt us down the road.  I am actually really fired up about this.  This is unique to any other season in the history of Granite Bay Football.  You guys get to be the trailblazers for this new era.  This is your chance to leave a lasting mark in the history of this great program.  Enjoy the difference, enjoy the grind, enjoy the process.  BE UNCOMMON!!!

2020-21 Athletic Clearance Process

Hello Grizzly Families –

Many of you have asked questions about player physicals and athletic clearances.  With regard to beginning the football season, we’re waiting for direction from the CIF and the district.  The school has been unable to schedule a team physical day as has been done in previous years and may be unable to do so prior to the beginning of practices.  However, all players will need to have their athletic clearances completed and cleared prior to taking the field when practices begin.

It is suggested that Grizzly families independently begin the athletic clearance process, including scheduling a sports physical for their player.  Review the clearance process and download necessary forms from the Granite Bay High School website ( rjuhsd.us/granitebay ) > Athletics > Athletic Clearances.  There are several actions that you must take to clear your player that are described on the Athletic Clearances page.  Please note that the clearance process must be completed entirely online (including uploading all forms).  Forms cannot be dropped off at the school office or submitted to coaches.

We hope that every Grizzly family is healthy and safe as we enter the Summer break and look forward to a successful and enjoyable 2020 football season for our players and coaches.

Go Grizzlies!
